Remember The Massage Oil

Edited by M. B. Aria

In this article, we look at the role and importance of using massage oils in the massage ...

Many people are trying to make their own massage oil. Often this ends up with disastrous results that many people are ashamed to share. Just as often, however, the process works out wonderfully and a lovely concoction of massage oil is created with very little cost, and with a slew of personal touches. This can make the massage oil as personal as the actual massage.

Why should we use massage oils? Along with the normal circular pressures of massage, a massage oil helps the fingers find the right amount of pressure to apply to different parts of the body. Massage oil used with circular pressures of standard massage alleviates stress and releases endorphins through the heat of the oil, relaxing the body to a tremendous degree.

All massage oils start with a carrier oil. Carrier oils are vegetable oils used to dilute the concentrated essential oils in the mixture of homemade massage oil. Carrier oil slows down the evaporation process, making it easier for the massage oil to absorb into the skin during the deep kneading process of a massage. A massage oil product without a good carrier oil may cause unnecessary breakdown of the oils during a deep kneading massage.

As the carrier oils are important, so is the process by which a massage oil will be used. For example, manual lymphatic drainage is a way of pushing the skin around, using massage oil, in a rhythmic way that results in moving the skin and increasing the lymph flow. Many people use the manual lymphatic drainage massage as a way to work with the body to stimulate more fluid movement. Oils are important in this process because they aid in lubrication.

People make their own massage oil by combining essential oils and carrier oils. The essential oils are based on fragrance and bring a scent to the oil. The recipe for one's own massage oil calls for a lot more carrier oil than essential oil. In fact, in most cases only a few drops of the essential oils are used in the final recipe.

A massage oil can truly make or break a quality massage. With a good massage oil, the fragrant aromas can move into the body's center and help engage in true relaxation through aromatherapy. A massage oil can also help the masseuse work his or her fingers around the body in a more efficient fashion, creating a better and more complete massage for the client or customer.
